Consensual cultures avoid direct confrontation and value solidarity. Confrontational cultures believe you can resolve issues through opposing viewpoints and spirited discussion. Consider if you prefer to accommodate others or engage in competitive debates. Consensual individuals aim for agreement and cooperation.

Relationship Vs Task

Cultures focus either on relationships or tasks. Relationship-based cultures nurture personal connections and view colleagues as friends, while task-based cultures separate professional and personal spheres. Relationship-based individuals build bonds through socializing and mutual support. Task-based individuals prefer clear work/life boundaries and judge colleagues based on performance and expertise over rapport. Decide if you rely more on personal or professional connections at work.

Cultures provide feedback ranging from subtle to blunt. Subtle cultures imply criticism through nuance to save face, while blunt cultures deliver direct feedback based on “just the facts.” Subtle individuals carefully construe criticism to be constructive while blunt individuals prefer transparency and candor. Reflect on whether you prefer to address issues directly or employ tact and restrain. Consider how critical feedback is conveyed in your own culture.


Cultures range from persuasive, valuing emotional appeals and rhetoric, to reasoned, relying on logic and evidence. Persuasive cultures believe persuasive language and passion can sway opinion. Reasoned cultures trust facts and data. To determine your tendency, consider if you prefer emotional, inspirational messages or evidence-based proposals. Persuasive individuals use stories and anecdotes, while reasoned individuals quote research and statistics.


Some cultures see debate and disagreement as a competition, while others view it as a collaborative process to find truth. Competitive cultures value winning arguments, while collaborative cultures aim for mutual understanding. Those from competitive cultures may see disagreement as a challenge, while collaborative individuals view it as an opportunity to gain new perspectives. Reflect on whether you see valid arguments on both sides of an issue or believe there are clear winners and losers.

High Vs Low Context

Cultures communicate implicitly or explicitly. In high context cultures, people communicate through subtle cues, while low context cultures rely on explicit verbal communication. High context communicators value implied understanding and reading between the lines. Low context communicators aim for clear, direct communication. If you tend to pick up on subtle gestures and unspoken messages, you likely prefer high context communication.
